Cod fish is one of the two fish with flakes and a tender-firm meat texture, the other is halibut fish.
Cod fish is expensive for a number of reasons.
Though they lay many eggs, very few survive to adulthood and they grow very slowly, therefore come with limited supplies.
They are bottom-dwelling fish, far away from shores typically inhabited depths of 200 to 1,300 feet about 60 to 400 meters.
